Player Uses Piano to Beat Elden Ring
Get ready to tickle those ivories.
FromSoftware games bring their own special brand of punishment - be it the balls-hard bosses, the fiddly (at times) gameplay, or the grueling journey you embark on. However, there are always some who crave a bigger challenge. Earlier in the year a musician called Anna Ellsworth beat one of the Elden Ring bosses by only using a harp. A streamer from New Zealand adapted a Fisher Price controller to be compatible, and someone has even overcome one of the game's shardbearers by using *checks notes* some bananas. ...in steps Omunchkin13 with a special challenge of their own.
Posting the video to Reddit along with the comment “Took a lot longer than expected, but I was finally able to beat Elden Ring using a piano as a controller.” There are extreme tones of nonchalance in that quote, as if there was an assumption early on that the game would be finished on piano in a reasonable amount of time. The full 22 minute video has also been posted to YouTube and shows some highlights of his 40 hour journey through the Lands Between, also shown on the video is the total death count - 343 if you’re interested. As someone who has played, struggled, and beat the game, the death count and play time is impressive even for someone using a traditional control method! To add to the difficulty, a free version of Bone MIDI Translator, an app the maps keyboard inputs to the piano, was used. However, the session would time out every 20 minutes including during a boss fight.
The control method is strangely beautiful as the individual notes are played casting a sort of stoic freeform jazz across the entire playthrough. The comments on the video are more or less universally in awe of the achievement. The best comment of all goes to Wizzard Boi’s “You are the true elden lord.” and I don’t think there would be many to disagree.
Let's see a show of hands for who wants to see the Donkey Kong Bongos used next!
