Sony Is Making a PS5 With Removable Disc Drive?
Sony continues finding ways to cut costs.
There are already two types of PlayStation 5 on the market. One comes with a disc drive while the other doesn't. According to recent reports, Sony's working on another PS5; this one with a detachable disc drive.
Sony's been looking for ways to recoup its costs on the PlayStation 5. Recently, the company decided to increase the cost of the console in various countries. This is in the wake of it still being nary impossible to get your hands on a PS5 due to part shortages and increasing production costs.
In theory, opting for a PlayStation 5 with a detachable drive makes sense. Sony could focus on the production of a single model moving forward without needing two production lines. That way people who want the disc drive can get it and those who don't can do without it.
Then again, the video game industry continues moving further away from physical media. It's possible Sony could go all in on a discless model in the future depending on how many people end up opting for the disc drive at an additional cost.
Right now, the PS5 with a detachable disc drive is slated to come out in September of next year.
